Developing Successful Leadership Styles for Women in a Changing Environment  

Two Days Workshop    
22-23 June 2024 (London and Online)

More and more women are desiring to develop and improve their leadership skills in areas of business and non-profit organizations.  To successfully negotiate the dynamic environment of today, women find they are needing to deal with both old and new issues, requiring a broader range of skills than in the past.  While some areas of society are accepting of women as leaders, women still face challenges to their leadership. This professional development course will help women to identify potential stumbling blocks to their leadership and help women develop the expertise and skills leading to successful leadership experiences.

There will be a variety of activities and tools used in the workshop to help the participants understand and learn about being a successful leader.  These will include self-assessments, role playing, and mini case studies.

The workshop objectives include but not limited to:

  1. Be able to identify behaviors which hinder and advance your leadership effectiveness by identifying and understanding potential roadblocks on the road to successful leadership.
  2. Develop and understanding of the effective leader characteristics, behaviors, and styles.
  3. Learn to identify effective communication skills and techniques vital to all effective leaders.
  4. Learn the leadership skills essential for handling reoccurring issues.
  5. Learn the importance of Setting Goals.
  6. Learn about the Sacrifices and Consequences of their choices.

Programme Structure

Structure

  1. The program will be organized around the best practices and most recent research and thought found in the literature related to women in leadership positions.
  2. There will be activities related to each learning objective. These are designed to engage the participants and to encourage discussion of the topics introduced in the course.
  3. Each participate is expected to share their own experiences, expectations, and challenges related to the topics covered in the course.

Activities

There will be a variety of activities and tools used to help the participants understand and learn about being a successful leader. These will include self-assessments, role playing, and mini case studies.

  1. First will be asking participants why they wanted to attend the course.
    • Their current role and position
    • Their desired role and position
  2. Asking participants to identify any blocking myths that may hinder a woman’s success.
    • Write sayings they remember from childhood
    • What activities did they most enjoy as a child.
    • How did they get their way with their (Mother? Father? Playmates?)
    • Did/do they participate in any sports?
    • Did/do they hold any leadership positions?
  3. Exercise on Ego States of subordinates and superiors and how to understand and react.
  4. Exercise on Listening Styles – There are 12 scenarios with 6 possible responses. Each response demonstrates a different type of listening style.
  5. Communicating clearly through “I” messages
    • Two scenarios with need to identify
      • I Sense
      • I Thing
      • I Feel
      • I Intend
  6. Exercise on Conflict Management and when to use:
    • Competing
    • Collaboration
    • Compromising
    • Avoiding
    • Accommodating
  7. Self-Assessment on Risk Taking
  8. Form groups of 4 to discuss building a good team
    • Building and Energizing your Team Exercise
    • Balancing expertise and goals
  9. Form groups of 4 to develop strategies you believe would be effective in dealing with sabotage then group sharing.
  10. Understanding organizational culture (self-assessment and sharing)
    • Discuss what makes an organization distinct
    • What are its written and unwritten rules
  11. Exercise on setting goals.

The workshop is designed and will be delivered by one of the world's top and renowned expert on Business, Management and women’s leadership, Professor Beverlee B. Anderson.

Beverlee has been an academician for most of her life. After being awarded Professor Emerita status by California State University San Marcos, she has continued to expand her knowledge through continuing education and theoretical and applied research primarily in the fields of business. Recently she completed a four-year Certificate program of liberal studies at the University of Chicago, which has added new dimensions to her professional endeavors. She began her academic career after receiving her MBA and Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Early in her academic career she held teaching positions at the University of Kansas and University of Cincinnati, later she held faculty and administrative positions at Wright State University, where she was Director of a Consumer Research Center and Chair of the Marketing Department. She served as Dean of Business at University of Wisconsin-Parkside and later at California State University San Marcos. Returning to a faculty position, she became acquainted with WASD and the concept of Sustainable Development. Since that initial introduction she has expanded her research to include the role of corruption on economic development and continues to research and write about various technological and social changes that have impact on the potential achievement of SDGs. She has taught as a visiting professor in graduate business programs in Mexico and India. She is past President of Marketing Educators Association and actively served as a Board member and officer in several International Business organizations. Her academic publications and presentations have focused on cross-cultural and international business areas including sustainable development.
