Safety Hazard and Panic Cases in Radiology Department

ONLINE 8 Hours Course
May 2024

Delivered by Professor Caroline Edward Ayad
Professor and Consultant Diagnostic Radiology

The purpose of this Radiation Safety course is to develop Radiology technologists competent in the knowledge required for the profession of Diagnostic Radiology Imaging Protection. This course enables them to analyze, integrate and apply scientific, theoretical knowledge combined with experience in order to perform technical procedures safely.

This course will explain what radiation is, the various types of ionizing radiation as well as the concept of physical half-life, various sources of radiation including background radiation. The course will also provide an overview of radiation exposure and contamination of radiation externally and internally. Radiation safety tenets of time, distance and appropriate or effective shielding will also be discussed in the course. The types of radiation detectors and personal dosimetry devices/badges/techniques will also be covered in the course. Also a brief overview of radiation biology concerning human health effects to high levels of radiation exposure, Safety applications in All Imaging Procedures (CT, MRI and Ultrasound).

What will you learn

The Radiation Protection Training Course for Occupationally Exposed Workers covers from the most basic concepts of ionizing radiation to the concepts of radiological protection, monitoring, and control of internal and external exposures. The course contains: Radiation Basics, exposure, and dose. Radiation Health effects, safety principles and standards. Radiation protection for external & internal exposures .Diagnostic Radiology Department (CT, MRI, US ) Protection Rules and Safety.

This is an academic course provides scientific teaching of the specialized subjects in Radiation Hazards and Protection for 8 hours in Radiation Hazards and Protection for all Diagnostic radiology branches. The course maintains core topics which are necessary to employ in the future plans. This strategy aims to give a comprehensive view in different radiation protection hazards and focused on the specific selected tracks with integrated topics of protection in all Radiology Branches.

Vision:

All of the health professions in the discipline combine close patient contact and good communication skills along with the use of technology, to maximize the results for the patient protection and safety providing high quality patient care.

Mission:

The course will convey to community and medical and paramedical sectors a highly qualified cadre with both theoretical and practical aspects used in radiation protection.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course the participant will have gained the following goals:

  • Being able to independently assess the safety situation of especially the worker, the patient, when working with ionizing radiation.
  • Acquiring the knowledge and understanding required by the authorities to manage a simple X-ray machine.
  • Reducing unnecessary radiation exposure with a goal to minimize the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
  • Preventing reliably the deterministic effects of radiation and to reduce the risk of stochastic effects to a reasonably achievable level.
  • Using three basic protective measures in radiation safety: time, distance, and shielding.
  • Teaching candidate how to work in conjunction with the ALARA principle.
  • Raising the level of protection awareness in Conventional, CT,MRI and US Department to maintain the safety of healthcare settings.
  • Explain types of radiation monitors and dosimeters, basics tenets of radiation biology and concerns of human health effects.
  • Identify mission and goals to improve knowledge about hazards, Ethics regulation in Scientific Research.
  • Participate actively in the community service.

Upon the successful completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • Apply the basics of radiation protection rules.
  • Apply the gained Knowledge in all the imaging cases.
  • Use the advanced instrumentation safely.
  • Communicate with others in different medical fields using standard method of protection.
  • Work in accordance with the responsibilities and professional ethics.
  • Cope with scientific development and Continue in learning.
Benefits for Employers
  • This course will help to acquire the knowledge and competence to understand the principals of conducting a safe and appropriate Diagnostic Imaging examination and to use machines competently and independently this will help their employers to achieve their strategy and goals.
  • Develop skills and understand the principals of protection and safely procedures.
Programme Structure

A blended teaching and learning approach is followed and consist of:

  • Formal lectures of 8 Hours in total which forms the core component of the teaching and learning strategy.
  • During lectures discussions are held, group work are encouraged, comprehensive relevant cases are given.
  • Electronic presentations of Power point slides are used extensively as a teaching tool.
  • Electronic communication takes place and the lecturer is also available for individual consultation.
